As regular readers will know I’m in such a continual state of foaming fury about the idiocies of the world that I sometimes go over the top. “Truly, there aren’t enough bullets”, I’m wont to cry in exasperation. Once this was just a phrase. Increasingly though – after a very successful ongoing campaign by the left to brand metaphor a crime – it’s seen as evidence of a moral failing almost as great as if not worse than the physical reality it describes.
So that’s me, completely buggered then. Maybe, since words are my stock in trade I should end it all now.
Problem is, every time I look at the internet or read the newspapers or watch something on TV I’m yet again reminded by just how right I am to feel the way I do. Truly, there really aren’t enough bullets.
By way of further proof, I give you two speeches made by politicians this week: Climate Change Secretary Ed Davey’s speech to the Royal Society; President Obama’s State of the Union Address.
Both were on the subject I try to mention as little as possible on Bogpaper because I don’t want to sound like a one-trick pony. Suffice to say that in both cases, both men were talking unutterable bollocks on a subject on which I know quite a bit: certainly a hell of lot more than they do.
And it wasn’t just disputable bollocks. It was unquestionably, demonstrably wrong bollocks. Almost every statement each of these politicians made was a flat-out untruth. They made scientific claims which were not remotely backed up by hard evidence.
Now whether they were themselves deliberately lying or whether they were merely badly misinformed we shall never be able to prove. But it really doesn’t matter, the more important point is this: this week two politicians in positions of enormous power made keynote speeches which will have a major impact on people’s lives. What they said was wrong in almost every way: yet serious public policy is going to be based on it.
Obviously, a State of the Union address by the President of the USA is going to have influence than one by a Lib Dem MP before a bunch of pinko, faux-science activists at a discredited science institution, but even so, both men were expressing a view very much current in the political establishment in the US, the UK and across the Western World: that Climate Change remains the great issue of our time and that extreme, coercive action needs to be taken by the state in order to deal with it, regardless of the social or economic repercussions.
But again, I say, this claim is just not true. And when you know it’s not true – and you can show it’s not true – what do you do? Do you get fired up with disgust and rage and dedicate huge chunks of your life to exposing the falsehood which, you know, is damaging the economy, restricting freedoms, ruining the landscape and inflicting unnecessary hardship on billions?
Or do you just opt out recognising, philosophically, that this is merely the latest fashionable thing – the “clamour of the times” as Dr Johnson called it – and that, though much more damage will undoubtedly be inflicted before it’s over there’s really very little a chap can do to stop it. So one may as well just accept it as the way things are. Or maybe – why not? – make the most of it while one can by getting a cushy job in the renewables industry or something to do with sustainability. Screw truth; fuck morality; make hay while the sun shines.
Well I’ll tell you what, there really are times when I find myself wishing I were made of different stuff. One of my Oxford contemporaries has just made a stonking great fortune from some renewables investment company which has struck a cosy deal with the government to help it buy a bunch of wind turbines. To me, capitalism – not that this is capitalism, it’s corporatism – doesn’t get any more unacceptable than this. It’s a stitch up, pure and simple: Big Government and rent-seeking corporatist vampires joining forces to squeeze the blood out of the taxpayer. I’m sure my Oxford contemporary knows this. I don’t think you can be involved in that sector and not know the truth, by this stage. But I’ll bet you he has a way, way nicer house than I do, and more holidays, and better wine, and newer, faster cars, and that he never worries as I do all the time about the cost of educating kids and the needs of old age. And I’ll bet too that he finds that being relieved of those quotidian financial cares is more than the enough compensation for having to live with the knowledge that the disgusting, cynical way he earns his living makes him a total, utter cunt.
And I’m not boasting about my moral superiority, here. Stating it, yes, because it’s a fact. But definitely not boasting – for I’m not sure there’s anything boast about.
I’m beginning to think that our society has grown so irredeemably corrupt, our economic system so skewed and tainted, that it is foolish and vainhearted to kid yourself any individual, however committed, articulate and informed, can do a single thing about it. Kicking against the traces only makes you angry; it gets you into trouble; it puts you perpetually on the outside of things.
If you take your fill at the pigsty with all the other troughers, on the other hand, well at least you’re in a better position to give your kids a better start, and your loved ones more creature comforts and security, and your friends a nicer pad to come and stay in. And isn’t that what life’s really all about, given that we’re not here for long: forgetting about our souls and all that changing-the-world nonsense – and concentrating on the only things that really matter – friends and family?

Its starting to sound to me like you have financial problems and you note that corporatists have ways of making easy money.
There are other ways of making money apart from rent seeking, so you shouldn’t have to sell your soul to the left in order to be able to provide for your family.
I understand that I don’t know much about journalism and being an author, since its a long way from my expertise, but I do note that author’s of chick-lit seem to make good money, Mensch was a millionaire, and I believe that Fifty shades of Grey has sold quite well.
Maybe if you invent a female pen name and write novels in that genre then your finances will be improved?
Alternatively, just invent some new derivative and flog them in the city…

You’re a leader in libertarian thinking and you need to reach out to more people. How about being a parliamentarian? You could stand for UKIP in some by-election or why not the Europarliament. Nigel Farage is great as Euro-MP (love those Youtube videos of him making fun of EU politicians), but you’re probably be even better.
You’re a one man thinktank. Gather some good people around you and set up a thinktank organisation.
How about writing a Norman Tebbit biography? Why doesn’t that already exist? Or does it? Anyway, he deserves a good one.

This was never just about wind follies James. This is about political change.
There is a worldwide battle going on. A battle of ideas which has intensified as the global wealth has grown. It would be easy to stick our heads in the sand and “play the game.” But this battle matters. You have to do what you can, where you can, and hope it all adds up to enough.
It is darkest before the dawn.
It might also be said that for those who have positioned themselves well, it is brightest in the brilliance of sunset just before the sun sets and they are engulphed by darkness.
What we see around us now is the triumphalism of those who know no other system of dealing with existence. They therefore think it is absolute and inevitable.
Here in Australia, PM Gillard is an exemplar. Schooled, or rather imprinted, by her ignorant and child abusing father from the age of 11 to 16 in a simple devotion to a particular format, in this case represented by Great God Gough (Whitlam), and having caught the very end of a mindset generated in the 1960′s in university in the early ’80′s, this is all she is. She is developmentally retarded since she has literally never been exposed to any influences that would otherwise have obliged her to at least put these early influences into a more mature context.
The nature of such a being is quite different to those of the previous generation who are the ones who are actually responsible for creating the current ethos, culture and structures.
The originators were aware of alternative ways of doing things and had to have the capacity to either confront them or undermine them. They had rat cunning.
Those who gave the foundational base for the current culture are now in their late 70′s or older or dead.
The spruikers are now over 70. [Intruigingly many were born in 1939]
The implementers are now all 60 or older. [Born 1946 is the year - check out the year of birth of those who came to positions of influence c1992 and continued to 2006].
No-one under the age of 60 has had any meaningful influence at all on anything at all for the past 40 years. Many under 60, or most in reality, have embraced all this, either by ignorance of alternatives, necessity, or preference.
The point of this is that those who would provide the ballast for contemporary “culture” are now dead or ineffective; those who would promote it by engagement with those who need to be convinced are past doing so even if they had the inclination; and those responsible for implementation have largely got what they can take and have left the building or soon will.
All that will be left by the end of 2014 will be those who know only this a a manner of life, and when it fails have no capacity to revise, reposition or re-invent.
This not just the case with self-named “progressives” who have inhabited the carcass of the Enlightenment, it is also the case of those who position themselves as Conservatives which they use for cover to advance their own interests.
All of this is now over. We are now seeing the final push to assert the real agenda of both “progressives” and “conservatives” of that ilk. Primaeval self-interest advanced through control either through the agency of government or financial and corporate structures, but increasingly by all used in conjunction.
The “philisophical” and “moral” justifications are no longer tenable.
The current functionaries wherever they appear and whatever their form, are incompetent to do anything other than maintain the process they are part of.
If the engine fails they can’t fix it.
There are large – or vast numbers – of the naturally criminal that permeate all societal structures. The question is, will they able to prevail without a leqitimizing orthodoxy that claims a basis in what might be called “natural justice” or even reality.
So over the next two years all this will be starkly rendered. If that is widely seen, it is difficult to see how those attached to this can can survive.
So keep up the good work of being merely human and insisting that those who undermine that are seen for what they are.

Joseph Schumpeter, Alexis DeTocqueville and now James Delingpole (and Niall Ferguson)… I would love to believe that turning back the tide is a possibility (Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher and Bob Hawke gave it a good go) but believe that the Western electorate can/will no longer support the necessary measures. Your Oxford mate is right; look after your own, the ship really IS going down and there’s not a goddamn thing anyone can do about it.

I’ve reached the same point in my thinking. Having some historical background, I always thought the climate issue was overhyped, being entirely aware that it’s been warmer, a lot, before our era. As the hysteria grew, I spent, literally, hundreds and hundreds of hours trying to understand the science (and pseudo-science) behind the CAGW claims. That effort reinforced my view that the claims were bogus.
I crusaded, with friends, colleagues, facebook etc., and found myself regarded as a tin-foil hat guy (in the main). Most people don’t give a second thought to the veracity of what they’re told in the press and other media (particularly the ‘impartial’ BBC) and almost always simply believe the bullshit they’re fed. Even now, with the climate becoming cooler, with much harder winters repeatedly showing the lie of CAGW and the predictions made of runaway warming, people are still prepared to give credence to the bizarre claims that global warming is now causing global cooling. Cognitive dissonance doesn’t even begin to describe this process. It’s the triumph of lies and propaganda over real science.
But I’m exhausted with it; I know that there’s absolutely nothing I can do, apart from annoying my incurious and unquestioning friends (or, worse, the people who are so committed to ‘saving the planet’ that they’d countenance almost any oppression to do it). I still spend many hours each week keeping up with new developments but I feel worn out and, honestly, despairing that ordinary folk can’t be bothered even to think about it. Highly intelligent people I know simply regurgitate the Guardian or the BBC ideology to me. When I ask them to look at some actual scientific evidence, they simply dismiss it.
Like a lot of scientific fallacies, this will only go away when the scientists responsible get old enough and fade away. Until then, we are screwed and will see our lives change in dramatic ways as a result of this fraud. I am getting old enough to think that all I can do, like Candide, is cultivate my garden.
There is still too little said about WHY – the pols know exactly what they are doing when they lie to us about AGW. They do it with a straight face as if they are afraid that the TRUTH i.e. the real reason they are adopting suicidal policies – is something we can’t be allowed to know. Maybe we can’t. Maybe we can. Thing is, no one is telling. WHAT THE F**K IS *REALLY* GOING ON?

The whole point of the ‘Green Energy Policies’ is the effect that they will have on the west. Our elites have tired of the educated, informed prosperous masses necessaary for advanced industrial society.
The coming technological age does not need us and so we are being culled.

Things will get a lot worse before they get better. The economy has severe structural problems and the c*nts running the show are doing nothing to fix it, just trying to enrich themselves. Britain’s likely to be saddled with another Labour government at the next election so I expect the sh*t will really hit the fan some time during their term in office.
However blogs like this are really important because they lead to more and more people shifting away from the status quo; take the rise of UKIP as an example – some might dismiss them as a flash in the pan but they are a manifestation of people’s anger with the Establishment and are here to stay I think.
Take the Austrian School of Economics as another example, they are fighting hard to restore sanity to economic policy and will gain more ground as the corporatist interpretation of Keynesian economics becomes discredited.
In order to beat these b*stards, it’s necessary to expose them, their greed and incompetence and to pin the blame on them for their many cock-ups. As things get really bad in Britain, people may become more receptive to rolling back the State and the quangos, but it is up to classical liberals and co to win the battle of ideas

They may not have the integrity to examine a particular issue deeply, and this is tragic. But it might be a comfort to be able to find the kernel of goodness and nourish it. ?
Also, mankind will ultimately be shown that they cannot “fix” things until they live in accordance with their Creator’s “way”. Until that time comes, all will run to dust. Delingpole’s seething frustration is not surprising. The trouble with all conspiracy theorists is when they become so utterly convinced by their own theories not even verified facts will get in their way. And facts on climate change have never got in his way.

Ever since Delingpole became convinced that “Climategate” was a massive scientific fraud he has not stopped his pursuit. Never mind that none of the investigations found any such conspiracy nor anything wrong with the science; to conspiracy theorists it’s just proof that the “conspiracy” is true and more widespread. Never mind that conspiracy theorists abjectly refuse to demonstrate how their conspiracy theories could possibly work; plausibility is irrelevant to them. Having to explain anything is anathema to their objectives.
Delingpole has never let go. Rather than making the effort to understand the science, he has pursued his preordained conclusion of a massive, multi group, multi-layered conspiracy. He is not convinced by evidence to the contrary. He can only come up with more bizarre conspiracy theories to support his collapsing thesis.
Conspiracy theorists have a favorite dodge: cui bono – “to whose benefit?” It is a classic evasion as long as it sounds good. When it works against the conspiracy theorist’s claims, it is attacked as more “proof” of a conspiracy.
Despite the many efforts to get Delingpole to see reason, he only gets himself deeper into the loony bin. He doesn’t recognize it but most others have seen it all along. “Why can’t everybody see it, like me?” he yells in frustration.
The scientific evidence for AGW gets more solid by the day. For Delingpole that can only mean “the conspiracy is really successful – how can I make the masses see it?!”
No doubt Delingpole is aware of the evidence for the funding of climate change denial. Somewhere deep inside his psyche he must realize how easily he has been used, gullible and believing of the most inane conspiracy theories. Will it push Delingpole to see the error of his thinking as many have been urging him to understand for years? Time will tell. But expect him to treat the evidence below as just more “evidence” of his massive conspiracy theory:

Most worthwhile.
This is the age we live in. We must accept it and deal with it. I expect you have read Mancur Olson. If not, have a look at his books, particularly The Rise and Decline of Nations. The rent-seeking awfulness you are watching is an inevitable part of our world at this stage in history. It’s good you’re coming to accept it. You can identify it, blog about it, and shout it to the rooftops, but don’t allow your knowledge of it to destroy your life. These things are bigger than any one individual, and take longer to sort out than any one lifetime. Rome was in this stage for centuries before it fizzled away and the great empires of Europe arose in its place. Now they too are in long, slow, institutional decline, as is the USA.
We can lament that the world is an awful place, or we can recognize that, while we were born into an age of social decline, we are still extraordinarily lucky compared to almost any other person born in the history of the world.
Live your life. Find a way to enjoy it. Speak the truth about rent-seeking and institutional decline, but don’t tie your own happiness to the world figuring out the problem, or the solution.
Mancur Olson never did figure out how we could fix this, even though he spent a lifetime thinking about it. History suggests the only way out of this is for some dramatic event to sweep out all the entrenched interests. World Wars, the Black Plague, Bloody, awful revolutions. These are history’s fixes to our predicament. If we can figure out a better way, I’m all for it. Otherwise, I am content to let it be and live my life in accordance with my own values. Even though the big money goes to those who are dishonest enough to cozy up to government, there is still enough out there to live comfortably in a life of principle.

I recently worked myself into a nervous breakdown, trying to do too much. It’s going to cost me my nice house I’ve lived in for 26 years. Thank God it’s not cost me my family.

Off work, I started to look into Global Warming, & was surprised to see what a bear pit it was, with accusations & personal attacks aplenty. I’ve tried to understand the science, but it’s beyond me, I’m afraid.
I am capable of sorting lies from truth, however, & these are the conclusions I’ve come to: Lord Christopher Monckton deals in facts & Al Gore lies.
When Lord Monckton openly calls Gore a liar for predicting 20′ (6m) sea level rises in the same year he buys a seafront condo, & Gore, a multi-millionaire with a battery of tough lawyers on hand, refuses to sue, then that’s proof enough for me.
Gore obviously learnt his lesson last time he met Monckton in court & got exposed for “Errors of fact (13 I believe) & exaggerations” in his film An Inconvenient Truth.

At 2009 figures, the US govt had put $2 billion + into Global Warming each year for over 20 years & Exxon Mobil was howled at for putting in $23 million to look at the problem, spread over 10 yrs.
$2million V $2billion pa. Not much doubt what verdict the US govt wanted.
& the above figures are peanuts. Exxon’s $23 million was less than one five thousandth of the carbon trading done in 2008.
Qui bono? Now we can see. The Global Warming Scare Scam is a simple rip off. The bankers & traders & politicians like Deben & Yeo are profiting mightily. David Cameron’s father in law is earning £1000 per day apparently from windmills on his property.

On the science side of things, I’m just going to say that there has been no significant warming for ~16 years while CO2 production has continued to rise. CO2 as the cause for Global Warming has been debunked.
Steve McIntyre & Ross McKittrick demolished Michael Mann’s infamous hockey stick, so loved by the IPCC, but which unfortunately sought to deny the Medieval Warm Period & the Little Ice Age.

These men are retired scientists, working unpaid, as is Jo Nova, in the interests of science, truth & humanity, against the hugely taxpayer funded UN & US & other world govts.

On the political side of things, I think democracy is dying.
Western democracies are nearly all bankrupt, with huge unfunded off balance sheet obligations which will never be met, such as pensions & PFI contracts.

When we have a dumbed down populace electing dumb politicians who are ready to run this country at a deficit for 30 of the last 34 years, into debts so huge they can never be repaid, then democracy has had it’s day.
I’m resigned to that, & am curious as to what will evolve.
I don’t think the communist eco-freaks from the UN & the US EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) will win the day in their UN Agenda 21 ambitions. For one thing, Obama has turned out to be the best gun salesman ever: Americans wont go quietly into the FEMA camps.

I believe the traitorous BBC have been preparing our children for a post democratic society for the past 10 years.
I was laughing with my 7 year old niece recently at a BBC comedy “Horrible Histories”. She proudly showed me a book based on the series, written by the producer Terry Deary.
To my horror I realised that the purpose of the book was to undermine every foundation stone of our civilisation.
God is derided, the family unit mocked, the rule of law is belittled, & it’s evolution through Hammurabi & Moses. Religions of every creed are denigrated.
In 93 pages of gore, murder, cannibalism ,treachery, plague & famine, there are only 2 pages of praise: for China, which in it’s 5000+ year history, has never managed a just society, never mind a democracy.
This most insidious work is freely available from your local library “The Horrible History of the World”, where it is surrounded by works on global warming to brainwash the young 7 to 13 year old minds it’s aimed at.
Get down to your library & check me out. Involve your parish priests, your vicars, your MPs your Womens Institutes.
If we do not protect our children we do not deserve to survive.
